Description

The 1981 Cadillac Coupe DeVille a relative's in-law sold to my parents in 1990 or so. My mom took this photo not long after it was purchased. This is at my grandmother's old farm property.

It's 6.0-liter V8 had that terrible V8-6-4 system that never worked right, so it was disabled and ran on all 8 cylinders all the time.

My parents owned the car until 1994, when my dad over-revved it and it threw a rod. After that, it was traded in on a used 1989 Mazda 323 SE...which wasn't even remotely as cool.

I think this car is probably responsible for my love of old V8-powered American tanks. I'd love to own a 70s Caddy, and probably will sooner or later.

Wow, that's a pretty stupid way to kill an otherwise bulletproof car the 6.0 was the last proper big block V8 you could get in a Cadillac. '81 was the last year for it too- like the other 6.0s just run it in V8 all the time and enjoy it. Regarding its demise? I reckon your dad was banging the engine off the rev limiter without first getting it up to operating temperature. Such things can happen when trying to "rock" a car out from deep snow or soft grass/mud. I say this because money shifting (i.e. downshifting into a gear when you're going faster than the maximum speed for it) with an automatic is impossible. If my AOD can't be money shifted, that car's Turbo 400 can't be money shifted. This is because the transmission MUST talk to the vehicle speed sensor to determine shift points. Regardless, while that car's tenure may have been ended prematurely, it planted a seed that I can only hope has grown and blossomed since. It's the same story here, first car I ever rode in was my grandma's 1990 Town Car Signature Series. White with grey leather interior. She owned Cadillac Sedan DeVilles until '84 or so. She really didn't like when they put them on the FWD K platform, so she switched to Lincoln Town Car and never looked back.
